ANOTHER NAIF ANNOUNCEMENT - STILL NO DELIVERY

ANOTHER NAIF ANNOUNCEMENT - STILL NO DELIVERY

Today’s announcement of reforms to the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund from Minister Keith Pitt is yet another example of what the Morrison Government does best – a big flashy announcement, and no delivery.

The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility - now widely referred to as the ‘No Actual Infrastructure Fund’ – is in desperate need of reform, that much is true.

Only last week, the Labor-led Senate Select Committee on the Effectiveness of the Australian Government’s Northern Australia Agenda released a unanimous interim report, making a number of recommendations on reforming the NAIF.

Labor will review the Government’s proposed changes when we see the legislation, however it seems the Government has been dragged into announcing these changes as a result of last week’s committee report.

Unfortunately, it may be a while until we see any of the reform implemented as the legislation is not due to be introduced until sometime next year.

Northern Australia has already spent more than five years waiting for the Government to start delivering on the NAIF.

Review after review, announcement after announcement, and still the NAIF has only released about $218 million from its $5 billion budget - less than five cents in the dollar - five years after the NAIF was announced.

Hopefully, the Government’s announcement today, when eventually implemented, will be a step in the right direction.

People in Northern Australia don’t want another announcement from Scott Morrison. They want the delivery. They want money out the door.

A strong Northern Australia is good for the whole country.

It’s time Keith Pitt and the Morrison Government got on with the job.
