MORRISON BILLS WORKERS TO PUSH CASUALISATION AGENDA

New figures revealed in Senate Estimates lift the lid on how much the Morrison Government billed taxpayers, to push its workplace casualisation agenda through the courts.

Scott Morrison’s LNP Government recently backed a High Court appeal by labour hire firms who want to employ permanent coal miners as casuals.

We now know the LNP’s decision to meddle in the WorkPac v Rossato appeal has cost taxpayers $389,907. This is the first time the final cost of the appeal has been revealed.

Instead of backing mine workers, Scott Morrison and the LNP backed the labour hire firms and their casualisation agenda.

Even worse, the LNP has sent the bill to mine workers and all taxpayers, to the tune of nearly $400,000.

Earlier stages of the case had established that coal miners who work a regular pattern of work are permanent employees, not casuals.

Unfortunately, following the Morrison Government’s intervention, those decisions were overturned and the miners will now be employed as casuals. This denies them the job security and leave entitlements enjoyed by permanent employees, and in most cases means less pay. Research has shown that coal miners on casual or labour hire arrangements earn 30 to 40 per cent less than permanent miners doing exactly the same work.

This revelation shows Scott Morrison and the LNP continue to push their casualisation agenda, through the Parliament and now through the courts.

Casualisation in mining and other industries has exploded under the LNP and left Central Queenslanders worse off. New data shows nearly 4 in 10 workers CQ workers are in casual jobs. This is the second highest rate of casualisation anywhere in the country.

Now we learn Scott Morrison is making workers pay for it, through big legal bills.

Scott Morrison and the LNP are not on workers’ side. They say one thing in the coalfields, but in Canberra they work with One Nation to pass laws that increase casualisation and run legal cases to keep it that way.

The Morrison Government must explain why it has wasted taxpayer money on their casualisation crusade.

Only Labor will crack down on cowboy labour hire firms to guarantee same job, same pay as part of our Job Security Plan. It’s what Central Queenslanders deserve.

If we want secure jobs in Central Queensland, we simply have to elect an Albanese Labor Government.
