THE NATIONALS’ CLIMATE PLAN: A BIG, NEW MORTGAGE TAX

Queensland Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has let the cat out of the bag about the Nationals’ plan to deal with climate change - they want to hit Australians with a big, new mortgage tax.

Senator Canavan’s astonishing remarks come in response to recent warnings from his own Government’s Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg, that Australians risk paying higher interest on their home loans, if we continue to oppose net zero emissions by 2050.

Instead of protecting Australians from higher housing costs, Senator Canavan just says they should pay more:
“If we are forced to pay a little more on our mortgages, we should do that.”

While the rest of the world, the National Farmers Federation, the mining and gas industry and every State and Territory Government support the move to net zero emissions, the Nationals remain opposed, no matter what the price for Australians.

The Nationals’ plan for climate change is now clear - higher power prices, jobs disappearing offshore and a big, new mortgage tax.

Senator Canavan’s comments come on top of:
• The Nationals’ bizarre plan for a $250 billion dollar climate fund for foreign owned multinationals, to be paid for by Australian workers.
• More division within the Morrison Government, with Liberal MPs labelling the Nationals’ plan as “Argentine-style policies” and resembling the Pyramid Building Society collapse in Victoria.

The Nationals’ ideological prejudices show they are out of touch with Australians struggling with the rising cost of living.

The Nationals’ climate change plan is a clear and present danger to Australians. It will cost jobs, drive up power prices and impose a big, new mortgage tax.
